Frequently asked questions:

Q: What is beta software?

A: Beta software is typically pre-release software.  Do not use beta software on a production or mission critical machine.  Be aware that software, particularly beta software, is prone to bugs.

Q: What is Windows Home Server?

A: Windows Home Server is a backup server for use in a residential environment.  Based on Windows Server 2003, at its core is a stable, proven operating system.  Windows Home Server allows you to automatically backup all your important data every night automatically.

Q: What is User Account Control (UAC)?

A: User Account Control restricts administrative permission (permission to make changes to the state of the operating system) to programs that you have specifically granted access.  This is done by means of the UAC Prompt which is accompanied by a darkening of the screen as it switches to Secure Desktop.  Typically, program installations and system utilities require administrative privileges.

Q: Why do I get prompted with "Access Denied" errors?

A: You do not have permission to modify certain files, or haven't run a program with administrative privileges which requires them.  For files that your are denied access to, change the ownership of the object by right clicking on the file, selecting properties.  You may also need to change the file permissions on the file.

Q: Why can't I open "My Documents", "My Pictures", "Documents and Settings"... in Windows Vista?

A: Those are not real folders. They are actually "junctions" that point to the real path for program compatibility.  For "Documents and Settings" has been changed to "Users" and "My Documents" and "My Pictures" have been changed to "Documents" and "Pictures", respectively.  If you change your folder options to "Show protected operating system files", you will see these folders.

Q: What is so good about Aero? Isn't it just eye candy?

A: Aero is the windowing system that uses your GPU (Graphics Processing Unit on your graphics card) to create the user interface.  Traditionally, the process carried the burden of creating user interfaces and displaying them.  This takes a load off the processor.  Aero Glass is the transparent see-through windows you see.  That is just a cool effect that takes advantage of Aero without bogging down your system.

Q: What will the next version of Windows be? When will it be available?

A: Windows 7, the successor to Windows Vista, will be in a store near you beginning October 22, 2009.

Q: I just bought a new computer with Windows Vista Home Premium pre-intalled. When it gave me the language options I chose chinese instead of english. Unfortunately, I don't know chinese. Is it possible to change the language back to english? Thanks.

A: The only way to change the language after Vista is installed is to in install a language pack, which is available from Windows Update. Unfortunately, you can oly do this for Ultimate or Enterprise editions, so that doesn't apply to you. What you can do is reinstall Windows Vista using the provided reinstallation disks or other recovery option and select the correct language when the option becomes available.
